CURRENT PROGRAMMES. CIVIC THEATRE. “Clear All Wires” depicts the trials and tribulations of a fast-talking newspaper correspondent who steals a chorus girl from his employer, plots a shooting in order to make newspaper headlines, falls into the hands of the Russian secret police and otherwise keeps excitement going at a high pitch. Bonita Hume, the English stage and screen star, makes her Hollywood talkie debut in “Clear All Wires.” Una Merkel plays the chorus girl; James Gleason plays the comic secretary and a large supporting cast includes Alan Edwards, Eugene Sigaloff, Ari Kutai, G. Henry Gordon, Lya Lys, Law'rence Grant, John Melvin Bleifer and Guy Islier. “ Bed of Roses,” the second attraction, is a strong comedy-drama featuring Constance Bennett, Joel McCrea, Pert Kelton and John Halliday.
REGENT THEATRE. Produced on a spectacular scale, “Naughty Marietta” has Jeanette MacDonald as its star, and is a colourful production, with some delightful singing, a romantic plot and much humour. “All, Sweet Mystery of Life,” one of its songs, is very appealing; “I’m Falling in Love With Somebody” is another song that is very popular. Miss MacDonald plays a princess who masquerades as a Casque tte girl, and Nelson Eddy a British officer in New Orleans. Their songs are backed by a huge symphony orchestra, a chorus of a hundred voices, and many musical novelties fitted into the score by Herbert Stothart,' famous American .composer. An elaborate cast surrounds the singing principals, including Frank Morgan, Elsa Lanehestcr (Mrs Chas. Laughton), Douglas Dumhrillc, Joseph Cawthron. “SANDERS OF THE RIVER.” Leslie Banks, one of the best known of English actors, Paul Robeson, the great singer, and Nina Mae Maclvinney, accomplished actress, head tiie cast of "Sanders of tiie River,” which will be screened on Friday. This picture, which is based on the creation of Edgar Wallace, shows tiie perils and purposes of the men of the Colonial Office who rule over vast territories in darkest Africa in tho name of their king.
