AUSTRALIAN BUTTER.

BETTER THAN NEW ZEALAND? STATEMENT IN SYDNEY. Although New Zealand in the 1934 season supplanted Denmark as the principal soiurce of imported butter into the United Kingdom, New South Wales’ "choicest" is of a higher quality than that of the Dominion, says the New South Wales Director of Dairying, Mr L. T. Maclnnes. "We are about 20 per cent, higher —9O per cent, against New Zealand’s 70 per cent.,’’ Mr Maelnnes pointed out. "In regard to the other States of Australia, the quality position is not the same as In New South Wales, and the reason for this has been the subject of inquiry and frequent discussion.” Quality Varies. Mr Maclnnes said he agreed with the Commonwealth supervisor of dairy exports (Mr Wigan) that until about 80 per cent, of the butter exported by the three big exporting States was graded as “choicest” the adoption of a national brand would not be advisable. Though ( returns from England show an increase in butter consumption there, Australians have been eating less butter, according to Hie latest figures from the home market. In 1929 the consumption of butter in New South Wales was 351 b of fac-tory-made butter per head; in 193435 in decreased to 291 b per head.

Consumption figures were: 1920, 39,000 tons; 1933, 30,400; 1934-35, 34,000.
