SWIMMERS’ SAFEGUARDS. HAMILTON CLUB FORMED. i . i J ENTHUSIASM OF MEETING. I I Enthusiasm was the keynote of a well-attended meeting at the Y.M.C.A. [rooms last evening to consider the | formation of a Hamilton Life-saving Club. Mr W. J. King presided. Delegates from the N.Z. Royal Live-saving Society and the Auckland Surf Saving Club attended the meeting for the purpose of tendering practical advice on the formation of the club. Reporting on the work of the special committee set up to make further investigation into the possibilities of forming a club, Mr King stated that it was unanimously decided by the committee that a club should he immediately formed. The committee had also come to the conclusion that in addition to the executive committee a co-operative committee of kindred associations should also he formed. The members of this committee would not act as officials,but would 'help in an advisory capacity and co-operate with the executive in the conducting of galas and similar functions for the raising of finances. It was necessary at the outset to have a real high-class team of lifesavers, which would have the effect I of advertising the club, while at the I same time its members would act as instructors to school children and members of the club. Mr A. McGregor, president of the Auckland centre of the Royal Lifesaving Society, congratulated the meeting on their enthusiasm and the manner In which they had ensured the founding of the club on a sound basis. In introducing the delegates from (he Life-saving Society and the Auckland Surf Saving Club, Mr McGregor stated that the work of the Surf Club was confined to beaches, while [hat of the Life-saving Society was confined, for the greater part, to rivers and lakes. W. Gower; club captain and chief instructor, Mr E. B. Lowe; re-[ presentative of Royal Life-saving; Society, Mr A. 11. 'Boulton; joint sec- 1 retaries, 'Mr W. R. Wiggins and Miss B. Robinson.

It was decided that the co-opera-tive committee should consist of headmasters or representatives of secondary schools, representatives of primary school associations, swimming clubs,, rowing and canoe clubs, and the Y.M.C.A. The various aspects of resuscitation and life-saving work formed the basis of short talks by Messrs F. Langley, K. C. Reid and 11. C. Sid ford, Auckland delegates to the meeting. The various methods of rescue, both as regards surf and still water, were treated in an Interesting manner by the speakers, while demonstrations were given in the box-line apparatus. On b?half of the meeting Mr King thanked the visitors for their practical advice, which had provided a basis for the initiation of the club’s activities.

On behalf of the visiting delegates Mr A. McGregor thanked the chairman for his remarks and for the cordial reception that had been accorded them.
