In the finals of the North of England tennis championships at Scarborough Wilde and Butler defeated Lyttleton-Rogers and A. G. Stedman (New Zealand), 6 — B, 6 —3, 6 —4, i t). In the singles Stedman defeated Lyttleton-Rogers, 6 —2, 6 —3. The loser was very nervous and lacked his usual brisk style.

FIRST TEST MATCH. AUSTRALIA v. SOUTH AFRICA. A THRILLING MATCH. JOHANESBURG, Aug. 24. The first tennis test match Australia v. South Africa was begun to-day in bright and breezy weather. In the •singles Quisl defeated Kirby (South Africa), 6—3, 6—3; Crawford defeated Farquharson (Soutli Africa), t ; y i 5 —7, 7 —5. In the doubles Crawford and Quisl defeated Farquharson and Musgrove, 6 3, 6 4, 4— 6, 6 —4. q’he match between Crawford and Farquharson was the most thrilling seen in South Africa for years.
