In the finals of the North of England tennis championships at Scarborough Wilde and Butler defeated Lyttleton-Rogers and A. G. Stedman (New Zealand), 6 — B, 6 —3, 6 —4, i t). In the singles Stedman defeated Lyttleton-Rogers, 6 —2, 6 —3. The loser was very nervous and lacked his usual brisk style.
FIRST TEST MATCH. AUSTRALIA v. SOUTH AFRICA. A THRILLING MATCH. JOHANESBURG, Aug. 24. The first tennis test match Australia v. South Africa was begun to-day in bright and breezy weather. In the •singles Quisl defeated Kirby (South Africa), 6—3, 6—3; Crawford defeated Farquharson (Soutli Africa), t ; y i 5 —7, 7 —5. In the doubles Crawford and Quisl defeated Farquharson and Musgrove, 6 3, 6 4, 4— 6, 6 —4. q’he match between Crawford and Farquharson was the most thrilling seen in South Africa for years. Both played a high standard. Farquharson was the stronger at the net, but Crawford's hard driving prevailed. UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS. WOMEN’S DOUBLES FINALISTS. NEW YORK, Aug. 24. In the finals of the women’s doubles in the United Slates tennis championships at Brookline, Miss Jacobs and Mrs Palfrcy-Fabyan beat Misses Andrus and Babcock, 6 —4, o—2.0 — 2.
