GENERAL ELECTION

RAGLAN ELECTORATE. MEETING AT NGARUAWAHIA. ADDRESS BY MR D. S. REID. NGARUAWAHIA, Sunday. Supporters of the National Political Federation, representing practically every district in the Raglan electorate, were present at the first meeting of the newly-formed branch of the federation, held in the Masonic Hall, Ngaruawahia, on Saturday afternoon, when Mr S. S. Saulbrey presided. Mr T. Paterson was appointed secretary. _ , . The sitting member, Mr D. S. Reid, was, on the motion of Mr Glascow, elected as the federation’s candidate to 'represent the Raglan electorate. Mr Reid, addressing the meeting, briefly outlined the legislation passed by the Government during the present term of office. Referring to the reduction of wages, Mr Reid said that any Government that began to cut wages was bound to be unpopular. However, the Government had had to be courageous and do what was best for the country. The speaker thought the Government should be congratulated on the fact that no loans had been raised to meet the unemployment situation. Election of Executive Committee. Discussing the exchange, Mr. Reid said that this measure had been brought in amid great opposition. He did not blame people’for opposing u if they took a narrow view of the effect of the exchange. The Government, however, taking a broad view, had seen that the country would benefit greatly in the long nun. Reference was also made by Mr Reid to the Labour Party’s proposals regarding fixed prices, and to the Douglas credit theory. Fleming, of Manurewa, Auckland. All speakers strongly emphasised the fact that the campaign for the coming election would bristle with difficulties An executive committee comprising Messrs Glascow, Sutherland, Duncan, Macky, Duxfleid, Saulbrey, Livingstone, Dusty and Bailey was elected.

Jordan will contest the Parnell seat at the forthcoming elections in the interests of the New Zealand Liberal Party, according to a statement by Mr W. F. Jamieson, chairman of the party. Mr Jordan formerly announced his candidature as an independent. , 1
