FAMOUS TERRACE TO GO. DEMOLITION OF BUILDINGS. HOMES OF LITERARY CELEBRITIES,. ■ »_ v. * ‘ (Official Wireless.) 5 (Received Aug. 26, 1.0 p.m.) RUGBY, Augusflfu* After many false alarms It is now definitely announced that the demolition of the famous Adelphi Terrace, overlooking the Thames River will begin early next year. The tenants there and in other buildings on a considerable site have received notice to quit by March. 25. The proposed development will probably include the construction of a huge block of flats, with the provision of office accommodation for many societies and organisatoins whose headquarters have long been in the area. The demolition will involve the labyrinth of arches and vaults on which the present buildings stand, and which have acquired almost legendary repute. The area known as Adelphi was laid out by four brothers named Adams toward the end of the 18th. century. In the present century it has been the home of many literary celebrities, Including the late Thomas Hardy, Sir James Barrie and Mr Bernard Shaw.
