BASKETBALL DANCE

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The dance held in the Town Hall, Te Awamutu, under the auspices of the local Basketball Clubs, proved very successful and was one of the happiest and best attended functions held during the season, largely due to tho enthusiasm of the clubs’ special committee. The halt had boon specially decorated with a very effective blending of coloured streamers, and excellent music was played by the Marimba Dance Orchestra. Extras were played by Misses A. Cox and P. Savin and Monto Carlo competitions were won by Miss Wellington and partner, and Miss M. Cruickshank and partner. Spot waltz competitions were won by Miss C. Gray and partner, and Mrs W. Tot and partner. Streamer and confetti dances also were much enjoyed. During an interval several clever ■competitions were decided, the winners of prizes donated by local business firms being ns follows: —Miss N. Maxwell, J. M. Linehan, R. GryllsThomas, R. McNeill, Verna 'Reed and Miss W. R. Baird. On announcing the winners the Mayor took the opportunity to congratulate the promoters of tho danco upon the success of the enterprise, and thanked the donors of the prizes for competitions. He explained that the objective was the provision of a number of basketball courts at the District High School. There were already six basketball teams 'Competing in a most interesting competition, especially so, for, unlike other sporting competitions, there was no trophy. The new courts would fill a decided want and he commended tho efforts made to construct them. A delicious supper was served.
