WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

AT NQARUAWAHIA. At the August meeting of the Ngaruawahla Women’s Institute, held - in the Oddfellows Hall, (Mrs W. L. Hughes .presided over a. large attendance. Mesdames Little and Menzies were elected delegates to attend the group meeting to be held at Taupiri. A very instructive demonstration of the “Selflt” style of dressmaking was given by Miss Flay, of Hamilton. The competition for the afternoon was the making of a knitted article, and many very fine entries were exhibited. Airs Hunter was the winner, with Miss McLaren second. On behalf of members of the Institute, the president, Mrs Hughes, presented a bouquet to Mrs Sands, who is shortly to leave the district. A vote of sympathy in her recent bereavement was passed to Mrs J. McFarlane. “My favourite recipe” was the roll ■call for the meeting. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Menzies, Snowden and Abbott. AT MATANGI. The Matangi Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting on Thursday in tho Hall. There w r as a large attendance, Mrs H. Whewell presiding. The roll call for the day “What I would do if I won £3OOO in the art union,” brought forth many .good suggestions. The competitions were “scones,” the winners being Mrs Lovelock 1, Mrs Harold Thompson 2; sponge cake, Mrs Ellison 1; pastry, Mrs H. Whewell 1. A demonstration of cane stool making given by Mrs Allwood, of Tauwhare, proved most interesting. Mrs A. McLennan did brisk business at the trading table. Afternoon tea was -served. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. Trownson and L. Libeau.
