McMahon won the open golf championship of Australia from Ferrier yesterday by one stroke. His 293 for 72 holes lowered the course record by three strokes. Bolger”s 69 in the fourth round was also a course record. This is the third time Ferrier has filled second place in the open. The young New South Wales amateur, who Is only 20 years old, was leading the field at the end of the third round, but istarted tile last round with a five and a six and took a fatal seven at the seventeenth. McMahon, who is 37 years old, gave a superb display in a gruelling test. Par for the 72 holes is 292. Stewart, who was leading at the end of the second round, collapsed yesterday, recording 80 and 82. The leading scores were: — McMahon, 74, 74, 73, 72 .... 293 Ferrier, 73, 74, 72, 75 ...... 294 Bolger, 77, 78, 73, 69 297 G. Naismith, 71, 77, 74, 75 .. 297 Gray, 72, 73, 78, 75 298 V. S.
