THEATRE ABRUPTLY CLOSED. MISS BRAMLEY’S COMPANY. ■ORDEAL FOR LEADING LADY. AUCKLAND, Saturday. A courageous feminine figure, Miss Nellie Bramley, leading lady in the ■company which played up to Thursday night in Ills Majesty’s Theatre, ■stood outside the unexpectedly closed doors of the theatre last evening and advised disappointed patrons that there would be no performance. Some members of the company had sailed for Australia by the Marama yesterday afternoon. It, had been advertised that the company, of which Miss Bramley Is the talented lead, was lo appear last night in tho final presentation of “ Fair and Warmer” and that, this play would give place to-night lo “ Polly "With A Past.” which would he presented during !hc •coming week. The performance was cancelled without public warning. Miss Bramley, who was on salary and took no part or responsibility in Hie management of llio company’s New Zealand lour, refused lo sail, and instead decided lo attend at His Majesty’s Theatre last night in order to make a personal explanation lo disappointed patrons. Miss Bromley's good name as an actress was at stake —she has a, host, of admirers In this •country and a reputation for flnn dramatic and 'comedy work which she considered herself in duty bound to protect. And she did tin's very successfully last, night.
Apart, from 'Miss Bromley’s personal appearance, 'there-was no indication to the public why Hie theatre, was in darkness. Even the ushers and doorkeepers on their arrival at, about seven o'clock received a surprise.
