TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. The president, Mr R. L. Somers, presided at the annual meeting of members of the Te Aroha Jockey Club on Friday evening. There was a large attendance. The balance-sheet showed income £10755 11s 6d and expenditure £10,041 15s id, leaving after the deduction of depreciation £451 2s lOd, a credit balance on the year’s operations of £713 14s sd. The excess of assets over liabilities appeared at £9540 12s 6d. In proposing the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman expressed satisfaction with the result of the year’s operations, and the improvement In the financial position of the club. In the statistics of racing clubs In New Zealand It was clearly shown that the club, without exception, led the Dominion In respect to a two day’s meeting, and its turnover was greater than that of many four-day meetings. The committee bad taken into consideration the effecting of improvements proposed last year, those or terracing the lawn to give accommodation to double the number of people and the addition to the totallsator house. Thanks to the members of the committee the farm account had shown a profit. In the matter of the club’s application Tor a further two days’ racing permit, the Conference stated that extra two-day permits were not available, and the club’s reply was to the effect that one day would not he of any use whatever.

Racing Taxation

As would be seen in the report several of the leading officials had been reelected unopposed. Much had been heard of the heavy taxation on racing clubs the president added. This was undoubtedly, severe and he felt sure tnat during the doming session the ’Governmelnt would deal with the matter of reduction. He considered that many clubs had themselves to blame for the decreases registered as the stakes offered in many cases were not sufficient for owners at a distance to pay expenses. The adoption or the report and balancesheet, seconded by Mr j. Pohlen, was carried unanimously. . The chairman referred to the demise during the year of several prominent members of the club, Messrs S. Davies, J. Rowe, D. Jackson, C. Martelli, P. Maloney and T. Shire. Members stood in silence as a mark or respect. Election of Officers. The election or officers resulted as rollows:—President, Mr R. L. Somers (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs J. B. Johnson, R. Burke and P. Baine (reelected); treasurer, Mr J. P. Somers (reelected). For Tour seats on the committee there were five nominations. A ballot was taken and Messrs F. Rowe, J. Kenny, G. McGlashan and C. 11. Murphy were declared elected. A hearty vote or thanks was passed to the committee and officials for their services during the past year.
