WIFE ASSAULTED

LABOURER CHARGED. FURTHER REMAND GRANTED. COUPLE NOW ON GOOD TERMS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Thursday.

A remand until September 12 was granted in the Magistrate’s Court when Manley Symes, labourer, of Pahiatua, •appeared charged that on July 24 at Tc Matai, Palmerston North, he did assault Elsie Elizabeth Symes and cause actual bodily harm. Detective Barling in asking for a remand, said the wife was still in hospital, improving slowly. Counsel for accused, Mr Gordon, said there had been provision that he, as accused’s counsel, should accompany accused to hospital every time accused visited his wife. He had visited his wife four or five times in the last fortnight. Counsel asked that the provision for his accompanying accused, be now withdrawn. He said the other parly had been forbidden to see accused’s wife, both by the wife and by the hospital authorities. Accused and his wife were on perfectly good terms. There was no 'Chance of any clash arising. 'Detective Barling said he had no objection to dispensing with the provision mentioned. The remand was then granted and the provision withdrawn. Bail was renewed on the previous terms.
