WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

AT TURANGA-O-MOANA. At the August meeting of the Turanga-o-moana Women’s Institute Mrs S. Maisey presided over a good attendance of members. Visitors were present from Matamata and Te Aroha. Mrs Brindle, the delegate to the Dominion conference, gave a full account of her visit, The roll-call, a rhyme, was responded to with some witty verses. A demonstration of egg-shell work by Mrs D. B. Higgins was greatly appreciated as was a talk on (lie aims of the Institute by Mrs W. A. Gordon, tlie Matamaia Federation president, Mrs Sturrock won a d’oyley competition, wilh Mrs Wooderson and Miss Muliane equal, 2, and Miss J. Denton i. The hostesses were Mcsdames J. Carruthers and Cooke.

AT WAITERIMU. The Waiterimu Institute held its monthly meeting on August 7, Mrs R. Grundy presiding. The president gave a very clear talk on the recent conference in Auckland, to which she was a delegate. It was decided that each member should knit a child’s singlet by the September meeting, same to be sent to a charitable institution. Mrs S. W. lies then interested members with a talk on her recent trip to Waitomo Caves, Tongariro, Taupo, Rotorua and Tauranga. A competition turning jumbled names into names of mountains was won by Mrs C. P. Hawken.

The hostesses, Mcsdames W. Taylor and J. Storey served luncheon.

AT MANAWARU. Mrs Waugh, vice-president, presided over a large attendance of members of (he Manawaru Women's Institute on Tuesday evening. Arrangements were completed for the forthcoming birthday celebrations, when visitors will lie invited to eompele for the best thrift articles or garment. Prizes have been donated by Mcsdames Graham, Lamb, Waugh and Faulkner. The rollcall, “What I would like to sec altered in the affairs of New Zealand,” proved very interesting and instructive. A competition for the quickest, wound skein of three-ply wool held by a competitor, caused considerable amusement, and was won by Mrs Weir, with Mrs Trebilco second and Mrs Thompson third. Tlm' hostesses for the afternoon were Mcsdames Cullen and Hughes.
