WAITERIMU NOTES

ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. On August 17 Miss Shona Mackv, of Taniwha, who during the winter has been teaching many of the cliild-

ren of Waiterlmu, Taniwha, and Matahura, fancy dancing, gave a most enjoyable afternoon finale to the course of lessons. The chief item was “ The Wedding of the Painted Doll," in which those taking part performed splendidly, •reflecting great credit -on their instructress.

1 Owing to Derek lies being ill -Molly Burrett took the part of the bridegroom. The bride was Isobel Corrie. Mary Grundy and Daphne Slbrey were the bridesmaids, Brian Storey and Dene Corrie, page and flower-girl, and Joy lies, Little Red Riding Hood. An Irish jig, by Marie and Edna Hawken, Allan and Kenneth Storey, was very much enjoyed. The children danced Sir Roger de Coverley. after which tea was served, followed by games and a few dances. | During the afternoon Mrs lies voiced j the feelings of all present, and thanked ■ Miss Macky for her efforts. ! Annual Production. ! j Tho Waiterimu Amateur Dramatic Society gave its annual production, which this year was a musical extravaganza, “Tlie Rajah of Bray,” on August 20. There was a large at- ! tendance and the produclion was the | best effort to date of the society, due I in no small cause to the direction of the producer, Mrs S. W. lies. | Tlie songs and duets were well rendered, the dances of tlie slaves including llic solo dance of the chief slave, were enthusiastically received and the chorus work was exceedingly good. The cast was as follows:—Rajah of bray, Mr S. W. lies; Prince llassan (his heir), Mr W. B. Irving; Selim (sea captain),. Miss Hoyle; Ibrahim, Miss Turner; Matta (grand vizian), Miss Taylor.; Mrs Ibrahim, Mrs R. Grundy; Dorinda and Floribcl (daughters of Mr and Mrs Ibrahim), Miss P. Taylor and Miss Grundy; Zelda (chief slave), Miss Rowling; Zuiieka (chief dancer). Miss Stiona Macky; Slaves, Mrs Corrie, Misses M. Rowling, J. Harrison, \. Grundy and J. McGovern; soldiers, Messrs. R. McGovern, C. Beghie, W. Laurie and K. Poison; sailors, Messrs. 11. Sands, C. Harrison, A. East and J. McNally. j The society has spent a large sum ! this year on foot and fly lights, which j were a considerable improvement and I the scenery was more effectively done, I Miss Hoyle being designer and chief painter Personal. Mrs S. W. lies will leave by (he Marama to-day for Melbourne. Miss N. Storey wilt return to-mor-row trom Sydney, where she has been for the past two years.
