FILM HIRING.
A STANDARD CONTRACT. FIRST IN THE WORLD. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. What is said to be the first standard film-hiring contract of the kind in the world is embodied in a form of contract that has been approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs under the Cinematograph Films Amendment Act, 1934. The provisions, as set out in a supplement to the New Zealand Gazette, stabilise and legitimise under Government authority all film-hiring contracts made between renters and exhibitors.
The act gives -relief to exhibitors from “blind and block booking.” Hitherto renters have been able to secure contracts with exhibitors on selling out the names of pictures and artists concerned and then, irrespective of any re-adjustment of terms, to substitute for certain pictures others of less merit. The renter must now be given the first 36 releases In the country of origin.
Provision is also made in the Act for regularising business methods -of payment, for assessing damages in eases of unfulfilled contracts and for a free 'hand in advertising.
