WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

AT EUREKA. The Eureka branch of the Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Hunter presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs Harris was appointed delegate for the biennial conference to be held in Hamilton on October 22, and as many members as possible were urged to attend. The treasurer, Mrs C. Masters, read her report, which was adopted as read. Owing to the demonstrator being unable to attend as arranged, flag 500 was played, the successful trio being .Mesdames E. Hunter, L. Harris and Aliss Harris. The competition (six varieties of biscuits) brought forward a good number of entries, the winners being Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs. Di Clarkin 2, and Airs Harris 3. Alisses Wilkinson (Pukekohe) and I. Banfleid were the judges. The sales table, in the charge of Aliss If. Saleman, did good business. The roll-call was, “What name 1 prefer other than my own.” Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Alesdames L. Hinton, P. Shine and Aliss B. Harris.

AT HOROTIU. y THIRD ANNUAL BALL. i s A scene of gaiety was presented at t the Horotiu Hall on Wednesday evensi mg when the Women’s Institute held their annual ball. Excellent music ? was supplied by Mclntosh’s orchestra, 1 and prizes were won by Mr and Mrs ; Nicholson, Miss Saunders and Mr : Rowe, Mrs Tidmarsh and Mr W. Cl. Booth, Mrs Lewis and Mr Rogers. The Te Kuiti Women’s Institute held Its monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Gorin presided over a good attendance of members, and extended a hearty welcome to three new members. The Mayoress, Mrs Carroll, was the guest of the afternoon, and was called upon lo judge the many beautiful bowls of flowers entered in competition for Mrs Sutherland's trophy. Mrs Payne was successful in gaining first place. Mrs Muller was second. The competition, best article made of half a yard of -cretonne, was won by Airs Martin, with Airs Higgins second. ( A very Interesting demonstration on making paper flowers was given by Mrs Gowper, and was much appreciated. The roll call, “Children’s sayings,” caused much amusement. It was decided lo plant a rimu tree in Hie school grounds on Arbor Day. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Ferguson and Catra, and concluded a pleasant afternoon. AT WHITIKAHU.
