MEETiiIG OF COUNCIL. CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS. TE AROMA, Monday. Mr W, C. Kennedy presided at the August meeting of the Plako County Council on Monday, Messrs W. R. Lowry, XV. McLean, J. M. Stewart \V. F. Starke, XV. 11. Emett, D. Johnson'and D. Burgess also being present. Votes- or sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mrs E. McSweeney and the late .Mr C. S. R. Martelll. Correspondence was read . from the Elstow School Committee stating that undue speeding of motor vehicles past tho school was still or frequent occurrence, and stating that a visit from t-lie traffic Inspector would he welcomed. It was decided to take tho necessary steps. Tho Minister of Finance wrote stating that in the matter or the council’s application in regard to £52 Is 3d expended on tlie suppression of peat fires last summer the previous decision to tlie effect that a further grant would not be made, could not be altered. The application of H. Kirk, Richmond Downs, for a slaughterhouse license was granted. Time Lost by Sickness. Correspondence was read from the Unemployment Board in reference to loss of time by sickness, and stating that the previous resolution' requiring workers to make up the time within three weeks from date of recovery bad been withdrawn, and workers are not now required jo do so. A communication was received from the Department of Ilealtli stating a district health cilice had been opened at Hamilton in charge of Dr. F. W. XV. Dawson, medical health officer, to embrace the counties of Waikato, Raglan, Waipa, 'Piako. Otorohanga, Rotorua, Taupo, Taumarunui, Kawliia, XX'aitomo, Ohakune and Kaitieke. The engineer (Mr B. It. Horner) reported on the re-classifying of county roads lo third class. Permission had been granted for the traffic of lorries of six tons provided they had pneumatic rear tyres. There had lately been a request to the council to allow eight tons gross on three axle lorries, but this means that tlie principle of third class roads loading -he allowed. Only a few miles of the roads would ho sufficiently strong to carry third class traffic. Tlie -Morrinsvillc-Te Aroha highway is the iirst that should have the higher classification, as the other portions or tlie 'Hamliton-Paeroa highways are already under this heading. ir the Piako and xx'aikohua bridges were rc-contructed to main highway requirements tlie approximate expenditure would be £3500 and £IBOO respectively. The other roads proposed for higher classification arc: No. f Road from \\hiitoa to •Springdale; XValton-Taupo main highway rrom Waitoa to XX’aliaroa; Stanley Hoad from Tc Aroha to Te Aroha XVcst; Kerconc Road from Morrinsville to Ngarua. The total length or third class roads would ho 48 miles. The matter of the work on tho Morrinsville—Te Aroha Route would require to lie negotiated with the respective Borough Councils, two miles being in Morrinsvillo’s Borough and one in To Aroha. Tlie scheme or rc-classiflcation will be considered arter it has been referred to the Main Highways Board. A resolution was passed authorising a transfer of funds from tho Morrinsville riding account to (a) Plako Main Road Interest Account; (b) Morrlnsvlllc-Motu-mnolio Main Road Loan Interest Account. A Bridge Fire. The monthly report of tho engineer ■stated 3200 cubic yards of metal had been put on the roads during July rrom ten sources. A flro bfoke out recently at the Mangaitl bridge. Although It was raining hard, a truss was burning at one or tlie timber junctions and before being extinguished a cubic foot of xvood had been burnt out. Tills is the third time a fire at the bridge has been put out. Tho report was adopted. On the proposition of tho chairman it xvas decided to donate £lO towards tlie furnishing or tlie Te Aroha rest room. Tlie matter of the. conversion of loans was again lirielly discussed. It was stated tlie council could proceed with Hie conversion at practically a moment’s notice, hut for Ihe high rates of premium required.
