ANOTHER REMAND
CHARGE AGAINST HEWER.
MAGISTRATE ALLOWS BAIL. WOMAN ALSO ARRESTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. A detective to-day arrested Phyllis Shorter, aged 31, a domestic, and she appeared later at the Police Court with George Frederick Hewer, aged 49, described as a medical practitioner, who had been in custody under remand. They were jointly charged that on July 23 .they unlawfully used an instrument or other means on a female for a certain purpose. Both were remanded to August 13. The question of bail was raised by counsel, who said Hewer had been •in custody for a fortnight pending a ■report about the young woman concerned. lie understood the' girl was out of danger, if there had been any danger. Hewer was married, with four children. Shorter was married with •live children, aged between five and ■ten years. ' The police objected to bail for Hewer, saying the woman was still in hospital though out of danger.- ' The magistrate said that if she was out of danger there was no reason why bail should be denied. There did not seem •to be any suggestion that the course of justice was likely to be impeded. He fixed bail at £SOO with two sureties of £250 each.
