HOTEL DESTROYED.
FIRE AT WOODVILLE. OLD COACHING HOSTELRY. » WOODVILLE, Tuesday. After seriously menacing adjacent business premises for a period, lire shortly after midnight, completely destroyed the Club Hotel, a two-storey wooden building of 40 rooms on the corner of Vogel and McLean Streets. Three-quarters of an hour was sufficient to see one of the oldest landmarks in the town consumed by the flames. ‘ Tile hotel was erected In J 87G and used at one time as a coaching hostelry. It was the property of the Mafidel Estate, Wellington. The present licensee, Mr J. W. Reid, lias been in occupation for only a few months. Details of the insurances are not available, beyond the fact that the furniture was covered for £‘3so. Before the Woodville Fire Brigade bad the fire under control two adjacent premises, occupied by Mr R. R. Johnston, a land agent, and Kce Suo, a fruiterer, 'suffered from scorching, tile side wall of Mr Johnston's office, nearest the lire, being badly burned. Keo Sue suffered damage to stock, live tons of potatoes, a ton of ■pumpkins and fruit and confectionery stocks being badly damaged. The Bank of New Zealand and the Masonic Hotel, on the opositc side of the street, were also scorched.
