POLICE FIRE AT MOB

LAHORE, July 20
A detachment of the Royal Scots Regiment was forced to fire at a huge crowd of Moslem rioters as the climax to day and night defiance by the mob arising out of Sikhs’ attempt to demolish a disused Moslem mosque situated in the grounds of a Slltn shrine. The mob had resisted baton charges by the police, wrecked prison vans and threatened to overwhelm the police under cover of a barrage of brickbats. The troops were called out and Royal Air Force machines circled overhead. It is believed that 10 of the mob were killed and many Injured when the soldiers fired four rounds. The casualties -are uncertain as the rioters carried off most of the dead, but three were found dead later.
Fifty policemen, including five British, were injured by stone-throw-ing.
Indian cavalrymen charged and were met by a barrage of brickbats. One man was throwm from bis horse into a drain, w : here he w 7 as trampled to death by the terrified animal. The crowds are still menacing in spile of the curfew 7 , and refuse to leave the streets. Armoured cars are patrolling the city.

The Moslem crowd did not disperse throughout the night, and it increased in the morning becoming violent and throwing stones. Troops fired six rounds, four people ■being killed.
