Dairy Regulations. —New regulations under the Dairy Factories (Licensing) Act, 1935, are gazetted.

Cookery for Men. —Lessons in cooking for men are now included in the agricultural course at Christchurch Technical. College, to teach future farmers to coolc for themselves.

A New Convent School. —A tender at £3400 has been accepted for the erection of the new Convent School In Hastings, and the work is to be put in hand almost at once.

Currenoy In London. —Gold was quoted in London yesterday at £7 is 04d, the dollar at 4.95 5-16, and the franc at 74 '5-8, compared with £7 Os lljd, 4.96 anl 74 11-16 respectively the previous day.

Bledlsloe Oratory Medal. —ln an inter-university contest at Dunedin, Miss C. Forde (Victoria College) won the Bledisloe oratorical medal. Eight competitors, two each from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, took part.

Band At Hospital.— The Hamilton Regimental and Waikato Municipal Band will present a programme of marches and selections at the Waikato Hospital, at 2.15 p.m. to-morrow. The band will be under the leadership of Lieutenant A. E. Savage.

Films and Religion. —A message from London states that a Cinema Christian Council, of which the Primate, Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang, is president, has been formed to explore the possibilities of utilising films for the purposes of religion.

The Stranded Maheno. —It is reported that the Japanese captain the Oonah intends to salvage everything of value from tiie stranded Maheno. The latter now has a list of 12A degrees toward the sea at Fraser Island, and shore anchors have been dropped in order to keep her upright.

Prices of Butter. —A dairy produce review issued by Messrs A. S. Paterson and Company, Limited, agents for J. and J. Lonsdale and Company (London), Limited, states that it is considered there will be no decline in butter prices before September, but on the contrary, prices may appreciate.

Pipis in Kawhla Harbour.—Regulations restricting the taking of pipis in Kawhla Harbour .appear in this week’s New Zealand Gazette. No person shall, except for his own consumption, take any pipis within the harbour. Any person committing a breach of this regulation shall be liable to a line of £SO.

Price of Silver. —Silver was quoted in London yesterday at 30 3-16 d an oz. spot, and 30 3-8 d forward, compared with 30 3-16 d and 50 5-16 d the previous day. The quotation for silver at per fine oz. was 32 9-16 d, same as the day before.

Footwear for Needy Children.—' With the object of raising funds to provide boots and shoes for Hamilton's needy children, a community “sing", will be held In the Theatre Royal next Tuesday, commencing at 12.15 p.m. The Rev. Jasper Calder, of Auckland, will be the song leader, and ho will be accompanied by a party of Auckland performers.

No Unemployed. —“ There are no unemployed in Murchison,” said Mr J. A. Clements, travelling professional to the New Zealand Golf Council, who has just returned from a tour which embraced that district. Mr Clements said Iliat. there were 200 subsidised gold miners working along the Howard River and Ihey seemed to be doing well.

Building In Matamata. —Since November 1, 1934, twenty houses in the Matamata district have been erected under the provisions of the Unemployment Board’s building subsidy. Tho total value of the new houses was £10,103, and of this figure £9138, representing seventeen houses, was spent within the borough and £965, representing three houses in the country. ‘Tho subsidy amounted to well over £BOO.

IWatakl Gold Dredging. —Under date the 16th inst. the dredgemaster reports: —“During the week ending the 14 th inst., the dredge worked for 133 hours 30 minutes for a return of 42 ounces 6 dwt. 12 grs., pulling ahead 31 feet in ground, the average depth of which was 17 feet. The dredge had a good run for the week, which, with the exception of five shifts, was spent in the river. -Most of the gold obtained last week was very light, and did not weigh as well as expected."

St. Mary’s Convent. —lt is proposed to celebrate the jubilee of the opening of St. Mary’s Convent, Hamilton, on Saturday, October 26, and a strong committee has been set up to make the necessary arrangements. The Convent was opened on March 1, 1885, but for several reasons it was deenjed advisable to hold the celebration in October. Old pupils of the Convent who reside outside the district are requested to communicate with the secretary of the committee (Mr Peter Kelly).

Queen Carnival “ Sing.” —Another very successful community sing was held in (lie Railway Institute Hall last evening, the proceeds being for Ihe Frankton Queen in the Rugby carnival. Mrs 11. Absolum was at tho piano and Messrs 0. Stevens and Mill. S. .Martin were the song leaders. During the evening items were rendered by Miss Betty Chestnut, dance; Miss Joan Fowler, tap dance; Messrs. H. S. Martin, \V. Anderson and tho Spooner Bros., songs. The remainder of the evening was devoted to dancing.
