UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.
DEPUTATION FROM CHRIBTOHURCH DISCUSSION 'VyiTH MINISTER. . : (By Telegraob.—Press Association.? WELLINGTON, Saturday. Important general policy questions relating to unemployed relief were discussed at-a private deputation-to the-Minister of Employment, the'Hon. S. G. Smith, by Mr C- O. Morse, president of the Municipal Association, Mr Hurley (secretary), Dean Julius, and -Messrs D. G. Sullivan, E. J. Howard and H. S.„S. Kyle, Christchurch-mem-bers of Parliament. The requests were that there should be a 20 per cent, increase in scheme 5 and sustenance payments, the construction of public works at standard wages and an increase, if necessary, of the unemployment tax to a shilling in the pound to provide adequate finance for these extensions.
The Minister, in reply, pointed out that these were all important policy questions which necessitated consideration toy Cabinet, and he would undertake lo submit to them all of the issues raised-
Another question on which there had been considerable discussion in Christchurch, was cleared up. r ...the-Minister. making it clear that there was no intention on the part of the Unemployment Board to refuse to meet the cost of administration in connection with the river protection scheme on which, if necessary, 500 men can he engaged.”
