A message from Simla states that the dropping of a cigarette end near the research institute at Kasauli, an important military hill station, caused, a great forest fire that threatened to destroy the cantonments. The local troops reinforced by companies from a neighbouring station, fought the Dames for 24 hours by cutting down trees and thus narrowlysaving the town of Sabathu. Captain Lane, of the Cheshire Regiment, was burned to deatli in the course of the fight against the flames. One ofllcer and two men were seriously burned.
