MANY NEW HOUSES INVOLVED
An indication of the remarkable revival of building in the Waikato, following tile introduction of the building subsidy scheme towards the end of last August, is provided by the figures for ihe period ending at May 31. During this period 174 applications for the subsidy were received at the loeal office of the Labour Department, the total value of the work, which involves new buildings only being £94\719. Although a proportion of the applications include work outside Hamilton; a large .number of buildings within the borough is involved. No fewer than 169 new houses are among the projects concerned in the subsidy applications. With additional applications received since May 31, the total value of the work is now' in the vicinity of £IOO,OOO.
Twenty-two applications for the subsidy on painting and alterations have also been lodged at the local office.
