PLAY IN COMPETITIONS. I" IN FOR CLAUDELANDS ROVERS. NOTES AND 'COMMENTS. (By " Sideline.") Saturday produced two changes in the teams engaged in the South Auckland Football Association’s championship competition in that the team which had headed the table since the beginning of the season had Its first loss and the club at the bottom of the table gained its first victory. The first team, Hamilton Wanderers, went down to Pukemlro, at Pukemiro, by three goals to two. At Seddon Park Claudelands Rovers 'had their first win when they defeated Glen Afton by five goals to one. Although the match was not In the same class as that played at Seddon Park the previous week, It provided some exciting episodes in the second half. Rotowa-ro enthusiasts saw a bright open game, when their home eleven went down to Huntly by two goals to nil. Championship Table. Wanderers’ loss of last week cost them their position on the championship table and they have been superseded by Starr Town and Pukemlro. The positions are as follows: — Goals

A New Outside Left. ■ Playing at outside left, Martin was a new-comer to Rovers’ ranks at Seddon Park. In the first, half he did not see much of the hall and di-d not have a -chance to show up, but in the second spell he made some good movements, centring well on several occasions. 'Vyallace, at Inside left, seemed loth to part with the ball on many occasions and did not give his -outside man much opportunity.

Glen Afton’e ’Keeper. Although he lost an easy goal at the start of the game, Allsop, the Glen Afton ’keeper, made some good saves later in the day. Several times he was severely tried by the opposihg forwards, and, despite the fact that the ball passed him five times, he made -some good saves. Webster was as steady as -usual. Bohem© To Raise Funds. Advice has been received by the South Auckland Football Association from the Minister of Internal Affairs, granting them permission to employ a scheme for the augumenting of their funds. With the increased number of followers the code has' gained this year the association’s venture should be assured of wide support. Two Depleted Teams. W-hen Hamilton Wanderers were defeated at Pukemiro they Were a sadly depleted team, having lost the services of Raven, the goalkeeper, and Clark. At the -same time Pukemiro were not playing at full strength as they had to field two reserve players. The game was fast from -the outset and the visitors -were very lucky to have kept the score as low as one all at half-time.

Collins’ Cutstanding Play. Collins played an exceptionally bright game for Rovers in the match against Glen Afton, arid his team owes a lot to him for their success. Fast and ’sure, he was always on the spot when he was most needed to finish off a -scoring movement. • After the start of the second half he visited the Glen Afton goal with amazing regularity and in these excursions he -was well supported by Rogers.

Unluoky to Lose. RotoWaro fought hard against the vl-sltlng Huntly team and were unluoky to go down by a margin of two goals. On the trend of -play Ro-towaro at least deserved to draw with their opponents.

Too Many Penalties. The fact that the match betweeh Rovers and Glen Afton was not as fast as the one played at Seddon Park the previous week is, In a measure, attributable to the number of penalties awarded to each team. Too much whistle will spoil any game, and a referee can easily afford to turn the blind eye to some of the minor infringements.

Glen Afton's Forwards. G. Adams is a handy link in Glen Afton’s forward line and proved 'his worth on Saturday, when he led his team in some good attacking mover ments. At inside right J. Adams also toiled 'hard and co-operated well with Mackie. Ilanley is only a young player, hut possesses a lino turn of speed, which he often used to advantage. Played Well. R. Robinson played a particularly bright game at outside right for Pukemiro and was as sound on attack as ho was on defence. Jenkins was a sound link, while D. Robinson was playing well until lie received a hard knock on the face, which seemed to spoil him for the rest of the game. Marshall’s Solid Defence. Many of Rovers’ attacking movements fell when they met the opposition of Glen Afton’s half line. Marshall was by far the most solid defender, but he was well supported by Me Dryer and Barron. Barron, however, spoilt, one or two movements by high kicking. The fullbacks, Manderson and Woodger, put in some hard 'toil, hut Collins was 100 fast for them on many occasions. INTERMEDIATE GAMES. PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPETITIONS. The intermediate and primary schools competitions opened on Saturday. when games were played at '’Continued iu Previous Column.)
