LYCEUM CLUB.
PROGRESSIVE YEAR REVIEWED. NEW OFFICERS ELECTED. There was a large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the AVaikato Lyceum Club held in tho club lounge on Thursday evening. The president, Airs H. Douglas, presided. The annual report stated that the ■membership of the club was 269 In comparison with 270 of the previous year. Twenty-eight new members had been elected, 'three members were transferred from federated clubs, while 16 resignations, largely caused as the result of departures from tho district, were received. During tho year the tea room had been enlarged and an extra room 'furnished for use as a visitors’ room.
It was mentioned that the committee meetings had been exceptionally well attended and thanks were extended in the report to the House and Finance 'Committee for its untiring efforts in studying the comfort of members. The eighth birthday of the club had been held in July and a very happy time had been spent by a large assembly of members. “AVe are proud to be associated with the AVomen’s National Council which has done such useful work in the past year,” continued the report. Local matters dealt with included the lighting of the borough rest room in Victoria Street, which was now open and lighted day and night. A very Interesting reception bad been accorded Aliss Jean Batten, the New Zealand aviatrix in August, while the 'Cambridge Reading and Debating Society had given an attractive reading in the olub rooms in June last.
The report concluded by expressing appreciation of the work of the outgoing committee, the treasurer, Mrs H. J. 'Greenslade, who had steered the club through another difficult year, and the secretary, Aliss E. Eggleston, for her faithful service and kind attention, particularly to strangers and new members:
Reports dealing with the activities ■of the various club circles were presented by the 'convenors who all referred to a successful year’s work. The balance sheet disclosed an excess of expenditure over income of £37. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs H. Douglas; vicepresidents, Alesdames T. AV. Platt, H. T. Gillies, AAA J. Stevens and R. B. Cranwell; committee. Alesdames H. E. Annebt, F. Bullock, E. P. Cowles, iSt. 'L. H. Gribhen, G. Grylls, €. L. AlacDiarmid, H. T. AlcAlullin, A. E. Sandford, J. D. 'Smith, F. C. Vickery; honorary treasurer, Airs H. J. Greenslade; secretary, Aliss E. Eggleston. The following circle convenors were appointed:—Literary-, Airs J. AI. Horton; craft, Airs A. AV. 'Green; gardening, Airs T. J. Shaw; bridge, Miss AI. 'Pricker. Airs J. AI. Horton was reelected circle organiser. Several members referred eulogistically to the successful year and Airs G. do Vere Chitty congratulated the president and the committee on the work they had performed. Mrs 'C. H. Holloway spoke of the ■activities of the AVomen’s National Council. AVith Airs A. M. BiSley, she was appointed delegate to the council.
A light supper was served at the ■conclusion of the meeting.
