CITY COUNCIL ACTS. SPECIAL COMMITTEE SET UP. SIR G. RICHARDSON’S SYMPATHY, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. Among the decisions of the new City Council last night was tile setting up of un employment committee. This was done on the motion of Mr F. E. Lurk, who is the secretary of the Unemployed Workers’ Association. The committee consists of live councillors and two co-opted members, and ils functions arc to investigate avenues for the provision of work, submit plans lor the roabsorption of Iho unemployed, Lo report on the faciliti-s for providing work for unemployed adolescents, and make recommendations on mailers concerning the betterment of unemployed conditions. Sir George Richardson said that unemployment was a national question, which no local body could solve, hut lie would do all in his power lo help the mover of Hie motion. Only first aid had so far been attempted, and men were losing hope. There were some 7000 unemployed in Auckland, so that 20,000 people were directly affected. If all those people were to march down (Jueen Street they would lake two hours to pass a given point. The returned soldiers were getting older, said Sir George, and he appealed to Hie council to give them preference to the extent of 30 per cent, of those placed in work. Sir George Richardson was appointed to the committee.
