THE WORK OF THE “THEY.”

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Mr Gordon Coates informed the House recently that “Not. inside nor outside this. House will THEY let you alter the monetary system." A friend of mine in Queensland writes: “I have been permitted to have a much-needed holiday. Vital house and farm economy phrases are always tagged as follows: ‘I wonder if the bank will let us build a cowshed’; ‘We should have a well, but the bank won’t stand for it’; ‘I wish the bank would O.K. some new iron for the roof.’ ”

He continues: “Small wonder, then, that six-year-old Peter recently remarked, ‘Daddy, next time you write, ask the bank if I can have a little brother.’ ”

My friend is a small sheep farmer, and has for years had to obey the crack of the overdraft overseers.

The humour of the little six-year-old is overshadowed by the tragedy of the circumstances, and I fear this state of things is not isolated to Queensland. —I am, etc., NEW ECONOMIST. Hamilton, December 26, 1934.
