Copyright LONDON, Dec. 26. “ The city of Hull has become a miniature Soviet republic owing to Socialists capturing the municipality at the November elections,” says the Daily Mail. “ The Socialists are making the city a paradise for parasites. They have reconstituted the committee Which administers transitional benedts to the unemployed who had exhausted their dole. “ Whet’eas the previous committee carefully Weighed eases, the Socialists are revising them at the rate of 900 a day and spending £2OOO a week. This has resulted in a shortage of local funds, the administrator of which sent an S.O.S. to London. / “ The Minister of Labour, Mr. Oliver Stanley, demanded an explanation, and threatened to appoint a special official unless the Socialists mended their ways. • The Socialists then further speeded up the methods to the advantage of applicants as much as possible before the new scale of benedts Is introduced in January. In some cases they, are paying 17s a week to the unemployed member of a family earning nearly £S a week• “ There are many Instances of similar recklessness, which Is estimated to cost the city £IOO,OOO equivalent to a rate of 6d in the pound on top of the present 18s id in !be pound.”
