CRICKET.

PLUNKET SHIELD. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND.. CANTERBURY’S FIRST INNINGS 230 CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A stand by Bellamy and Kerr put their side in an excellent position. Both played very sound and careful cricket for a time. They had added 93 when the slump came. After this the bowlers yvere right on top of very weak batting. Kerr fell to another slip catch, and then Page, Hadlee, Roberts, Lester and Andrews added 29 between them.

It was only a spirited partnership between Allen and Graham that sent the second century up. Allen for a time was right off his game, but after settling down he scored his runs with some good shots. Auckland’s out cricket was firstclass, for In Cowie, Townsend and Matheson they have three good bowlers with useful supports in Bush and Garrard. The fielding was good.

TO-DAY’S PLAY. AUCKLAND AT THE WICKETS. (By Telegrapn.—Press >55001311011.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. With a lead of 49 on the first innings Auckland began its second innings in the Plunket Shield match this morning. Play began badly, losing one wicket for three runs, but Whitelaw and Weir batted steadily and 50 was passed at 12 o’clock. Whitelaw faced Roberts and cut the first ball past mld-off for a single. The- fourth ball of the over knocked Edmonds’ leg stump out. 31 —2. Weir came in and was apparently clean-bowled -by Roberts, but turned back, and after talking to the umpire resumed his innings. It is thought; the hall must have rebound from, the wicket-keeper’s pads on to the wicket.

Played stubbornly.

Weir 'played stubbornly on the defensive against Roberts, blocking nearly every ball and scoring slowly, Whitelaw leaving Andrews’ off stuff severely - alone.

At 25 Lester relieved Andrews. Lester kept Whitelaw subdued. Then Andrews came on at the other end. Whitelaw reached 20 by cutting a bumping ball high over the slips to the boundary.

, Runs came quietly in singles and pairs. Whitelaw glanced Roberts to fine leg for a! single, bringing 50 up after 59 minutes. A few overs later Whitelaw was run out by Page after a good return by Cromb in attempting a third run from a big off drive. 532 —37. Vivian joined Weir. Graham had his first turn with the ball at 64, relieving Page at the south end. He sent down a maiden to Vivian. .Weir hit Lester dangerously over Graham’s head at mid-off for three, reaching 30. Vivian Caught. Driving at Graham Vivian snicked a hall into the safe hands of Roberts at first slip, and the most dangerous Auckland scoring man was back in the pavilion.—72—3—7. , Townsend joined Weir. It was Roberts’ third catch of the match from three chances. Weir kept going solidly, cutting singles when occasion'offered. Townsend took no. risks at the start. Andrews took his first wicket of the day when Townsend, in trying to honk a short one, had his leg stump rooted right out. —77—4—2. Bush joined Weir, and both batted patiently till lunch. Andrews kept going at the north end after luncheon, Roberts being the oilier bowler.

Weir soon reached 40. One Jiundred appeared in 132 minutes.
