HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.

ROAD AND RAIL. PASSENGER TRAINS CROWDED. MANY CARS ON HIGHWAYS. Ahvays a busy period for the Railways Department, the Christmas season this year saw' a volume of traffic handled which is regarded as being considerably in excess of any in recent years. Since the schools’ vacation commenced the railways stall’ had been kept working at high pressure to cope with the passenger and goods traffic, and a steady increase as Christmas approached culminated in particularly heavy demands on passenger accommodation over the Christmas period. All trains on the main lines were packed and in many cases additional carriages had to be requisitioned to cope with the rush. At the Hamilton and Frankton stations the normal staffs were considerably augmented, and the traffic was capably handled without undue congestion. The’ trains for Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, and other popular resorts carried full complements of passengers over the peak period, and the station staffs w’ere called upon to handle large quantities of luggage. Goods and parcels business was also very heavy.

On the Highways.

On the main highways, especially those leading to the beaches, motor traffic has been very heavy since Saturday. The main south road from Auckland has carried a particularly large volume of traffic, which was augmented by a big influx of racegoers into Auckalnd. Yesterday there was practically a continuous* stream of cars on this road. Many motorists also traversed the main highway to Rotorua. It is anticipated that the New' Year traffic will be equal to that of the Christmas period.
