CRICKET.

PLUNKET SHIELD.

CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND..

AUCKLAND OUT FOR 279

(By Teiegrapn. —Press Association.)

, CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Auckland was commenced to-day. The wicket and outfield were very fast and dry. The Canterbury bowling is weak tins season, but early in the innings \\ hitelaw, Edmonds and Townsend made the bowling look first-class and Robots and Andrews frequently beat the batsmen with balls that passed very near the stumps. The Canterbury fielding was good, but Allen had a day off as wicketkeeper. Auckland at Wickets. Vivian won the toss and Whitelaw and Edmonds opened for Auckland to the bowling of Roberts and Graham. Edmonds, who had been beaten three or four times by balls which just missed the stumps, eventually went out. through attempting an impossible run. 37—1—11.

Townsend joined Whitelaw but neither played the howling of Andrews and Roberts with confidence and both had narrow escapes from being clean howled. Andrews, who had bowled seven overs for 14 runs, gave way to Lesler and a few runs later Roberts clean bowled Townsend. 56'—2—8. Vivian followed and played an over from Roberts aggressively, hut without scoring. Graham relieved Roberts at 60 and play was uneventful for several overs. The hundred was reached after 98 minutes’ play and Roberts took the ball from Graham. Andrews bowled again after the tea adjournment and in his second over Vivian gave a smart chance in , the slips which, however, Bellamy failed to - hold. Whitelaw’s end came when he gave Roberts an easy catch in the slips. 167—3—65. Weir joined his captain, but Vivian did not stay much longer. He swung hard at a ball from Graham and gave Hadlee an easy catch at mid-off. 191—4—70.

Wallace partnered Weir and the pair seemed well set against tiring bowlers when stumps were drawn.

Townsend brought three men close .up on the leg. Oliver slogged one safely into deep field, but missed the next, surviving a leg- before appeal.
