NINE PEOPLE INJURED.

OAR CRASHES INTO CROWD. SCENE OF WILD CONFUSION. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. On Christmas Eve, at 9.5 p.m., a flve-seater sedan motor-car mounted the kerb in Karangahape Road and crashed into the crowd on the footpath. Nine people were Injured, including:— Mrs Rose Morrison,"aged 37, of Grey Lynn; internal injuries and shock, condition serious. Mrs Maria Ecclestone, aged 42, of ■Grey Lynn; compound fracture of left leg, and shock, condition serious. Mr Hugh Boston, aged 55, of Free- , man’s Bay; leg injuries and shock, condition fairly serious. Mr Ernest Leary, aged 47, of Mount Albert; head injuries and shock, oondition fairly serious. Mrs Eunice Leary, of Mount Albert; fracture of left shoulder and abrasions. Allan Leary, aged 8, of Mount Albert; abrasions and sprained left ankle. Mr Thomas Ecclestone, of Grey Lynn; injury to ankle. Stanley Roberts, aged 15, of Ponsonby; abrasions to the back, legs and arms. Mr William Mudford, aged 43, of Newton; cut on right ankle.

The first four victims were admitted to the hospital while the others were able to go to their homes after receiving treatment at the hospital.

Knocked Through Window.

The motor-car, which was driven by Mr James Killen, a farmer, of Matangi, near Cambridge, who was accompanied by flve passengers, had been parked at ah angle facing toward the footpath, and it was when the engine was being restarted that the machine suddenly mounted the kerb. Before Mr Killen- could regain control of it, the car travelled across the footpath, and after knocking three youths through a plate-glass window in tlie entrance to Flacks on’s shop, continued about I’s yards along the footpath. The footpath was packed with people doing their Christmas shopping. Pedestrians were thrown to right and left, the scene being one of utmost confusion.

None of the occupants of the car was injured in its career along the pavement. With the exception of the pushing back of the left headlight and a slight dent in the left front mudguard, the car was not damaged.

Statement by Driver.

The driver said the maohine was owned by his father, Mr Nathan Killen, of Epsom. The only reason he could give for the accident \was that when he had stopped the engine a 9 he parked the oar* he must have accidentally left the gears engaged. He had been driving for 14 years.

DEATH OF A WOMAN. TWO (MEN IN SERIOUS CONDITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Mrs Rose Morrison (37), one of those injured in the accident in Karangahape Road on Christmas Eve when a car crashed Into a crowd on the footpath, died in the hospital to-day. The condition of Hugh 'Boston and Ernest Leary this morning was very serious, and that of Mrs Ecclestone was fairly serious.

NELSON, Wednesday. A service car, owned by Spiers Motors, when returning to Murchison early on Christmas morning, went oil the road on Hope Saddle, at 3 a.m., resulting in the death of two passengers, while three others are in hospital. The dead are :

'Miss Phyllis Merle Kite, 19 years, of Lake Rotorua. She died of her injuries before admission to hospital.

Mr George McKay, of Murchison, died from spinal injuries last evening.

The injured are:— Air Ernest Stewart, of Murchison, fractured collarbone. Air Gordon Baker, of Howard, concussion. Air Leslie Stewart, of Murchison, bruises and shock. All are making satisfactory progress. The deceased, Air AlcKay, has relatives at Tapanui. SEVERAL PEOPLE INJURED. .MISHAPS IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Weclne sda y. A molor-car driven by Air At. (dark, of 1 lohsonvi'de, swerved and struck a wall, turning over. Of the three women passengers, .Miss Ailsa (dark, aged 1 i, of liolisoiiville, suffered head injuries and her condition is serious, while .Miss E. Renlonl, aged 25, of Bayswater, also received head injuries. Airs E. Schofield, of Mount Albert, and AH’ Clark, also were injured. On .Monday evening, Mrs AI. Alasscy, aged 65, of Dlaluihu, was knocked over by a motor-car, and suffered concussion and a fracture of the right leg. Through falling from a tramear Air E. Kelly', aged 75, married, received concussion.

A motor-ear driven by Air A. J. Finch, of I'ai'gaville, collided with a power pole on .Monday evening. Air Finch, and the other occupant of the ear, Mr A. Fanner, aged All, also of l);irg:ivilli’, were injured. A motor-ear driven by Ale W. Gordon. aged 66, and a tenet; driven by Mr It. Hart., collide.l on Hie Great South Bund on .Monday. ran off the road, and he suffered concussion. When riding in a taxicab yesterday Mr M. Singer, aged 29, single, received concussion as a of the vehiole striking a power pole.

CAR OVER A BANK.

OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE,

TOWAI, Tuesday,

A motor-car, driven by Mr Howard Abbott, of Auckland, who was accompanied by his wife and two other passengers, skidded on the road on Sunday afternoon. The vehicle went over a steep bank and turned several somersaults before coming to rest. All the members of the party were severely shaken, and Mrs Abbott was cut by flying glass.

As a result of a collision in Tuam Street on Christmas Eve between a taxi and a private car four men sivere injured. Air J. Lowe, of Rlccarton, was admitted to hospital with head injuries. He is recovering. Three others were treated as out-patients. Mr Lowe was in the taxi on the side where the impact occurred. The car was pushed across the road, and the door was smashed.
