POLICE CHASE
MAN SHOT IN SPINE. SEQUEL TO FRUIT THEFTS. (From a Correspondent). SYDNEY, November 13. There was a sensational affair at Ultimo this morning, as a result of which Roy McNamara received a bullet wound in the spine. It appears that detectives Whiteman and Fagon were doing special duty following recent complaints of thieving off fruit lorries as they travelled from store to store. They saw two men jump on to the rear of a lorry, in which there was a number of cases of cherries and other fruit. A minute later, the two men Jumped off, and, according to allegations, each was carrying two cases of cherries. When t'hey observed that they were being followed, they dropped the cases and ran, followed by Whiteman and Fagon. Orders to surrender were not heeded, whereupon the detectives drew their revolvers and fired. Both men then separated and disappeared. 'Later, the ambulance proceeded to a house in Quarry Street, Ultimo, where they fouhd Roy McNamara, who stated that he had been shot. He was taken to hospital. The victim is'in no immediate danger, but an operation will be performed ■to/ remove the bullet. |
