MOTOR ACCIDENTS

three People killed. CAR LEAVES ROAD. CRASHES INTO GULLY. INVERCARGILL, Sunday. Three men, one a resident of Aucl*« land, met their deaths when a motorcar travelling from Gore toward Dunedin left ;the road at a spot between Raes Junction and Beaumont, between Thursday morning and yesterday morning' and crashed into a gully 300 ft. below. It was not until yesterday morning that the wrecked car and dead bodies were discovered by a passing motorist. The dead are:— Anrew Altken, who was connected with Aitken’s garage, Gore, married, with two children. William McPherson Moore, aged 40 years, single, traveller, employed by the Amalgamated Tobacco •Manufacturing Company, Auckland, W. Steven, no details available. The party left Gore on Thursday morning. It is believed that they wero •travelling in tiie direction of Dunedin. The members of the party were seen at Raes Junction on Thursday, but nothing more was heard! of them and the absence of any word caused fears to be felt for their safetyMN j. j. Moore, of Canon Street, Invercargill, an uncle of the late Mr Moore, left for the scene of the accident yesterday morning. The spot where, the fatality oc•curred is in Central Otago, over 80 miles from Invercargill and is on tho road favoured as a detour by motorists proceeding to Dunedin. The road nails for careful and skilful driving, turning -sharply as it does and dropping away to deep gullies. A stone parapet for the protection of cars is in existence, but it is not known whether the •car jumped this or broke its • way through.

YOUNG WOMAN KILLED. . FIVE PEOPLE INJURED. CAR CRASHES INTO POLE. THAMES, Sunday. On the tvopu Road to-day a caff owned and, driven by Mr E. Haynes, aged 22, baker’s assistant, left the road and crashed into an .electricpower pole, immediately opposite Mr E. B. Tizard’s gate. There were eight people in the ear.' A young woman was killed and five of the passengers were injured. The victim was:— Miss Mabel Horrox, aged 25, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Horrox, of Huntly, killed. The injured were:— Mr Ralph Shaw, aged 25, broken leg and broken arm. Miss Ivy Goodes, aged 24, severe wound In the thigh. Mrs J. Knowles, wife of a post office official, broken nose. James Edwards, aged 2a, severe bruises. Miss Pool, aged 26, severe bruises.. The driver escaped serious injury. It is not known whether i tyre burst or whether the steering gear went oul of action. The car, whi :h was being driven at about 30 miles an hour, left the road ,jumped a ditch and collided with the pole, and was completely •wrecked, the bodywork being torn away from tile chassis. Mr Tizard and Mr McConnell hoard the crash and' hurried to the assistance of the injured people. When they arrived at the scene of the accident, Miss Horrox said that -she was all right. After they had summoned help, at was found that she was suffering fl ' om concussion and in a 'critical condition She later ‘collapsed and died, sne iduc THAMES, Monday.

Hospital reports state that all are recovering except Mr Shaw, and are expected to leave hospital to-day. An inquest on Miss Horrox was opened this morning, and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given.

CAR COLLIDES WITH TRAM. TWO MEN INJURED. (By l’elegrapn.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Sunday. As the result of a motor-car, which he was driving, colliding with a tram' late last night, a man named George Brown, single, aged 38, is lying in hospital with severe head Injuries and is not expected to recover. Another man, Fred Glover, who was a passenger In the car, had his hand lacerated, hut his injuries are not serious.
