MEAT FOR BRITAIN.

RESTRICTION PROPOSALS. PRONOUNCED DRAWBACK. THE PORK POSITION. (Fy Teiegi’av:—un-ss Assnr'ntlnn.) AUCKLAND, Friday. “ Restrictions must inevitably act as a pronounced drawback to the meat production,” said -Mr T. A. Duncan, a member of the Meat Producers’ Board. The whole position is difficult and very uncertain. It is quite impossible to make any forecast of the long-term allotments." * It was expected that the long-term arrangements for the regulation of imports would be fixed to London in January; that the quantities to enter Great Britain for the next two years would be determined and meanwhile temporary allocations had-been made covering the first quarter ending March 31. “ The allocations for those three months seem to be fairly satisfactory,” said Mr Duncan. “The present figures ■appear likely t# cover the position, except perhaps in the case of porkers.

“ it Is in the pork trade that complications, if any, are likely to arise. The baconer allotment seems large enough, but already the killings of porkers are far above last year’s record figure. Pork production is rapidly increasing, and should any drastic restrictions be placed on this class of pig, this, coupled with the possibility of a dry season, may make it hard for farmers to put on the finish necessary to produce baconers.”

“ No difficulties are anticipated with respect to mutton and lamb, unless killings exceed those of previous years, and the provisions for quarter beef -seem adequate. It is to be regretted that the bobby calf trade has been interfered with, ‘as this gives valuable employment in the works during the slack season, helps to keep down the overhead expenses and has other advantages. ,
