WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

AT TE UKU A Christmas tree party was given to the children of the surrounding districts by the members of the Te Uku Women’s Institute. It -fcas held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, 15th inst. About 100 children were catered for and Santa Claus presented each child with a gift Christmas tree, also a bag of sweets and a balloon. It was a great delight and wonder to all the children. The tree was very bright and gay with all the gifts, lighted candles, silver and ooloured streamers and balloons. Songs were sung by the pupils of the Waitetuna School, and folk dancing by the Te Uku school children, both Items being beautifully rendered, and yere thoroughly enjoyed by parents and children. Lunch and afternoon tea was provided by the members. AT SPRINGDALE There was a good attendance at the usual monthly meeting of the Springdale Women’s Institute in the Springdale Hall, when the president, Mrs T. Sharkey, presided. Mrs H. A. Wagstaff and Miss K. Sharkey were appointed the delegates to confer with the Te Aroha Group re the Drama Festival. A donation was forwarded to the Waikato Federation to-, wards a presentation to Lady Bledisloe.

The request for members to bring a toy exceeded expectations, and the Rev. C. G. Sorimgour (Uncle Scrim) will be able to brighten the Christmas of many a needy child. The competition for a Christmas gift, the cost not to exceed one shilling, brought forth many entries, and Mrs L. Bailey gained first prize for a fancy article, and Miss J. Ryan the utility prize for a hand-made child’s dress.

Business being disposed of, the young members took charge, and as hostesses entertained most royally. A pianoforte duet was, played by Misses K. Sharkey and D. Fagan, while a play entitled “ A Quiet Chat ” was acted by Misses K. Sharkey, D. Fagan, N. Ryan, G. Price and J. Ryan. The capability of the young people was displayed in the sumptuous afternoon tea provided. The president extended hearty greetings and good wishes to all members, thus ending a very happy gathering. AT TAUWHARE. The December meeting of the JTauwhare Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday, 13th. Mrs Dingle, president, presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Institute song, after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mrs Bradley gave a most interesting lecture and demonstration on rallla work. The roll call was ‘‘How to get rid of flies.” The competition for decorated jam jar of flowers resulted: Mrs Dingle 1, Mrs Mancktelow 2. Mrs Nioholls 3. A cake donated by Mrs Eva, Wes' won by Miss D. Windsor. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Andrews, Durey and Miss 'Eva. The 'National Anthem concluded the afternoon.
