WOMEN’S DIVISION.

ELSTOW BIRTHDAY PARTY. The Elstow branch of the' W.D.F.U. held their second birthday party in the Elstow Hall recently. Altogether there were about one hundred ladies present, including visitors from Ngatea, Ngarua, Springdale, Te Aroha and all surrounding districts. A number of vases of flowers of various kinds, principally daffodils, which were entered in competition by senior and junior members of the W.D.F.U., gave the hall a very cheerful appearance. The competitions, which were judged by two members of tlie Ngarua branch, Mrs Hansen and Mrs Scott, were won by:—Senior: Miss Strange 1, Mrs Strange 2, Miss McCormick 3, for a bowl. For a tall vase, Miss Strange J, Miss McCormick 2, Mrs Burl 3. Junior: Miss Stewart 1, Miss Blackford 2, Miss Campbell 3. Prior to the concert programme the National Anthem was sung and the Creed of the W.D.F.U. was read.

The first item was a pianoforte duct by Mrs Burt and Miss Pierson; a vocal duel by Mrs Deed and Miss .McCormick; recitation by Mrs Lewis; a vocal solo by Mrs Alley; humorous playreading by members of the Tc- Aroha Women’s Institute, along with Hie other items was very much enjoyed by the audience.

Community singing was pleasantly indulged in for a while. Accompaniments for the afternoon were played by Mrs Burl and Mrs Oualtrough. ‘ A letter from the Manawaru Women’s Institute extending invitations to their birthday party to be held shortly, was read.

Afternoon tea was served and Miss McCormick had the honour of cutting the beautiful birthday cake.

A competition, something found in the kitchen, was won by Miss Lewis, with Mrs Clements second. Mrs Hair, who arrived at the parly about half-past three, after witnessins the arrival of Miss Ballon, gave a very interesting description of what look place. . Mi’s Cleave, president of the Nsalra \\ |)K.I Mrs Donovan, president for Hie Ngarua branch, and Mrs Sharkey, president of the Springdale Institute, al] expressed thrir appreciation and wished the Elstow branch a happy birthday and a prosperous year to follow. Hood business was done at a sales table. Miss .McCormick and .Miss E Dale presided during the afternoon.
