THAMES BOROUGH.
HEAVY BURDEN OF RATES. REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. THAMES, Monday'. There was a very large attendance at the public meeting this evening, called toy the Ratepayers’ Committee to dlsouss the rating position,•at Thames. The Mayor, Mr S. Ensor, presided, and Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., was present by request. One of the conveners, Mr N. Jonassen, said it had been hoped that with the appointment of the borough commissioner the town would have experienced some relief from the heavy burden of rates, tout this had not eventuated. The Mayor said that a small committee had been working in the best Interests of the ratepayers. The following motion was carried by an overwhelming majority: “The ratepayers of Thames, having made an honest endeavour to carry out the agreement with the representatives of the Thames bondholders, and believing that the present burden of rates will be ruinous, both to Thames property owners and to the security of the bondholders, resolve to put their, financial position before the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, and earnestly pray that the Government will intervene with a view to assisting all parties and immediately promote legislation appointing an independent tribunal to decide what measure of relief can be given in the present rating year, and what- further relief should be given for the subsequent year or years.”
