MAN’S TERRIBLE ORDEAL.

AUCKLAND, Monday,

At 2.30 this morning a shingle barge capsized in the harbour opposite Devonport; and, a man on board, Mr. T. Daniels, struggled for life for threequarters of an hour before being picked up by the merest chance. The barge carried 100 tons of shingle, which, following a squall, began to shift. Mr Daniels was trying to fix the cargo when the barge began to sink. The shingle fell around him, and he jumped for it. f On board a launch which had been towing the barge were Master C. R. Lannan and another. They could see nothing of Mr Daniels, and began to think that he was,drowned. At last they,'sawf him clinging to a piece of wood. He had drifted '440 yards with the wind, and though tired was in good condition. M
