FIRE AT DEVONPORT

TWO HOUBEB DESTROYED. ANOTHER GUTTED. SEVERAL PEOPLE BURNED.. (By teJearrapd— Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. At the height of a north-easterly gale, which throughout the week-end, a serious fire broke out in Devonport about ,12.30 this morning. Three adjoining houses were chiefly affected, two being destroyed and one gutted. . A block of seven dwellings and also dwellings opposite were threatened, and were saved only by the efforts of the Are brigade. . In escaping from the upper storey of a block of flats three women were slightly injured and were sent to the hospital. They were Mrs Mary Cameron and her daughter, Hope Cameron, aqd Mrs Jess Carter, Mrs Cameron’s sister. The Cameron family recently arrived from Dunedin, and Mrs Carter from Hastings. .One was injured in the back and the others were slightly burned. All are suffering from shock. Their condition is not serious.

A fireman named Worthington had his hand burned.

A fire at Pori destroyed a 12 roomed homestead belonging to Mr. R. E. Nelson, with its contents. The Insurance was £1550. Only an elderly employee was home at the time.
