Sixteen Maoris and one European had a narrow escape from, drowning on Saturday. ' A Maori canoe, ocoupied by 15 men and two children, on Its way from Waingaro to Raglan for a football match. The water was very choppy, and the canoe swamped and turned over near Motukokako Point. •One of the Maoris, named Amokete, swam ashore for help, the res t dinging to the upturned canoe. Eye-wit-nesses' from the shore say Amokete was very plucky and had a hard struggle to reach shore. ■ Mr. E. G. Galvan went out with his launch and rescued all hands after they had been Immersed in the Icycold water for more than half-an-hour. i ; ' , i . Many of the Maoris lost clothing and money. The Ehropean, Mr. Cecil George; of Waingaro. lost a suit-case with clothes and over £5 in cash.
