OBITUARY.
MR JAMES SANDBROOK. DEATH AT 99 YEARS. AUCKLAND, Monday. Sergeant-Major James Sandbrook, aged 99 years, died at the residence of his daughter at Devonport on Saturday. Mr Sandbrook was a Crimean War and Maori War veteran. MR THOMAS RODGERS. “THE FATHER OF PETONE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Monday. > The death is announced of Mr Thomas Rodgers, aged 93 years. Deceased was born on February 29, IS4O, in a small manuka bach on the Pelone beach. He was afterwards known as “the father of Petone.” He received a Crown grant of fifty acres in recognition of being the first white child born in the Wellington province. Deceased came to Manawatu in 1877, and farmed until his retirement.
