FREEZING WORKS.

SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE.

THE STRIKE CALLED OFF

AUCKLAND, Wednesday

The settlement of the freezing works dispute, which [began last October, was announced last evening. A decision was reached by the national executive of the Freezing Workers’ Union in Wellington, on Saturday to abandon its attitude in banning union members from accepting work under the new terms imposed by the employers last October. “ The forces against, us were too strong, and we have had to call the strike off,” said Mr W. E ; Sill, secretary of the Auckland Union. "We have put up a fairly effective protest, but no good purpose can be served by continuing it indefinitely.” Mr Sill said that as the present freezing season was practically over he did not expeot many union members would 'lrr’the' meantime “'seek work. “ In any case, a large number of former freezing workers will probably continue to refuse work under the new terms,” he said. “The jobs will not be worth while except to men who are hard up for other employment. Even those who accept work under the new terms do not necessarily endorse them."
