UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —As a regular reader of your paper I wish heartily to endorse your appeal to the public, or, rather, to those still getting some income, however small, to strain every effort to assist relief workers, whose present standard of living is obviously intolerable for a British community. I feel oertain your paper believes that the oause of unemployment must be removed before permanent relief Is possible, but in the meanwhile every citizen at some, small sacrifice can provide temporary assistance. While in no way criticising the merit of the appeal, and also Cr. H. D. Caro's proposal for the Borough Council to provide extra work to compensate for the cuts, I desire to point out that unemployment is a national, not purely local, matter, and there Is the danger that the Unemployment Board will treat the proposed subsidy scheme as an excuse for perpetuating the present scandalous position regarding cuts and “off” weeks. By alUmeans let Hamilton residents look around to provide odd jobs for relief workers in their idle hours; such will provide ready and immediate relief; but it is full time drastic pressure was brought to bear on the Unemployment Board an.d Government, who, so far, have cited no Justification for the present grossly inequitable . treatment. I suggest that the Mayor and as many councillors as possible proceed immediately to Wellington and demand that portion of the board’s boasted surplus of. £162,000 be distributed in Hamilton. Steps to circulate a monster public petition could also be taken. —I am, GtL ” SYMPATHETIC.
