LITERARY SOOIETY.

* POETS’ EVENING.

(Special to Times.)

An evening with the poqts was held by the Cambridge Literary and Debating Society last night. Mr. S. R. James spoke on Longfellow, with allustrations by Miss N. Langton, who gave 11 The Children s Hour,” and Mr. G. James, who sang “ Onaway, Awake, Beloved." Mrs. W. J. Ward had charge of original poems, anonymous items being recited by Mr. Max Ward, Mis» Joan Hardy, Miss Betty Brown and Mr. M. Wilkinson. The Poet Laureate, Mr. Masefield, was dealt with by Mrs. F. R. Wooldridge. A paper on, sea poems was read by Mr. C. W. Vennell. Miss H. Mocrhouse recited 11 Ballad of the Fleet” and “ Ocean’s Own.” Mr. G. James sang two sea shanteys. Mrs. H. L. Possenniski took Keats, with Miss M. McCathie and Miss Audrey Savory giving exerpts from the poet’s works. Mr. F. R. Wooldridge read a paper on Milton. Mr. H. H. White read selections from “Paradise Lost" “ After the Massacre in Piedmont.” '

Miss G. Perkins discussed poems of children and nature, Miss H. Ferguson reciting “ Forgiven" by A. Beetle.

The evening concluded with Browning’s works, by Mr. E. B. Ivemsley.

RUGBY SUB-UNION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEB.

The weekly meeting of the Cam« bridge Sub-Union’s management committee was held last evening, when Mr. H. Cubis presided over a representative attendance of delegates. W. Tiahula was granted a clearance to play for Ohaupo In the Waipa Union.

The secretary was instructed to apply to the Waipa Union for dispensation for J. Wallis and J. Speake to play for Leamington. The Leamington Club was given permission to regrade K. Sawyers, H. MahoOd, J. Mohurori from senior to junior.

A. Harris, H. HolUer, R. Kidd, B. Baird, S. Holmes, McConey were re- | gistered to the Hautapu Club.

Fixtures for Saturday.

Seniors: United v. Hautapu, square, 2.45 (Mr. B. McDonald) Leamington v. Northern, square, L. 30 (Mr. E. Scott).

Considerable discussion took place concerning the unsuitability of the square as a venue for matches. The emergency committee was appointed to go into the matter of providing a ground where all matches could ha played on the one field.
