FARMER DEFRAUDED.
THREE YEARS’ HARD LABOUR
ATTEMPT TO BRIBE POLICE

AUCKLAND, Tuesday,
Jack Walker (32), salesman, was sentenced to-day to three years’ hard labour for 'conspiring to defraud a farmer.
Mr Justice Smith, before sentencing accused, read a cablegram from 'the Vancouver police describing accused as a card sharper and coin matcher. It was clear that he was a practised confidence man. The sum Involved in the conspiracy was £SBO, of which accused alleged that he got only £l-82. Accused had told a detective that he thought New Zealand a great little country, and there was a lot of money to be made in Rotorua by a couple of good men. “ Rut," he added, “ I would want a little protection. We would give you 5 per cenj. and a guarantee that we would only take on visitors and never touch New Zealanders."
The Judge added; "When you get out of gaol ft will be as well for you to leave the country.’ ’
