UNEMPLOYMENT AND LANDLORDS,
A PAINFUL SCENE. (From a Correspondent.) SYDNEY, May i. There was a painful scene during a meeting between I lie Property. Owners’ Association and the United • Association' and the £ Assistant Minister (Mr Hawkins) today. • t , While telling of the plight of theunemployed, who were forced into the slrccts through inability to pay rent, Mr W.' H. Matthews, representing the unemployed, broke down. lie said that .750,000 people in New South Wales were in need of assistance, and they had stood almost more than they could stand. He had befriended 2000 cases, and 19 out of every 20 were genuine. The speakers for the Property Owners asked that the Government carry out their promise to the Minister for Justice (Mr Martin) to provide half of the rent on the houses occupied by the unemployed, and so obviate the necessity for evicting them.
Me Gardiner, one of the speakers, said that If nothing was done to solve the unemployment position no constitutional Government would be In control In the country two years hence.
The Minister gave the deputation a sympathetic hearing and promised to place the matter before tire Cabinet.
