MUSICIANS ENTERTAINED
AFTERNOON RECEPTION.
There was an atmopshere of friendly informality (says the Wellington Dominion) at ;a reception given in the lounge of the Midland Hotel by the Executive Council and Women’s Auxiliary Committee of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra. The guests of honour were three celebrated musicians who are visiting Ne-w Zealand, Jascha and Tossy Spivakovsky and Edmund Kurtz.
The lounge, with blazing log fires at each end and decorated with lovely dark red chrysanthemums and autumn leaves, presented a delightful picture. Mrs Knox Gilmer (president of the Women’s Auxiliary) and Mr D. A. Ewen (president of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra) received the guests and were assisted by Mr Ernest Dawson (secretary) and Dr. A. F. Hickey (treasurer), who presented everyone in turn to the guests of honour.
Mrs Gilmer wore a smart black and white tweed coat, fur-trimmed, over a marocain frock, and a dark blue felt hat. She wore a shoulder spray of orchids.
Mr Ewen said it was his pleasureable duty on behalf of the Executive Council and the Women's Auxiliary ito welcome these celebrated artists and to thank them for visiting New Zealand. “ These ambassadors of the arts," ’continued Mr Ewen, “ are what we depend upon in New Zealand, owing to our comparative isolation from the rest of the world, and it is indeed a great treat to have such distinguished musicians with us.”
Mr Temple White, on behalf of the Music Teachers’ Association, paid tribute to -the 'three guests, and spoke of the vivid recollection he had of the brilliant playing of Jascha Spivakovksy when he visited New Zealand eleven years ago.
