A FEVERISH FIGHT. REST HOUSE THREATENED. GRASS FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telesranli.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A grass fire swept two hundred acres on the Cashmere Hills last night, and was within 50 yards of the-Lewis-ham Sisters’ Rest House. Only the efforts of 40 men, most of whom were hurriedly summoned from the city, saved the building, which the sisters prepared to evacuate. It was a feverish fight for an hour against a strong wind. BLAZE AT MANGERE. VALUABLE VIOLINS LOST. AUCKLAND, Monday, A house at Mangere, owned ar, occupied by Mr F, G, Inglis, wa* totally destroyed by fire last evening, all the contents, which inoluded several valuable violins, being lost. SCHOOL DAMAGED. AUCKLAND, Monday. Minor damage was done by a fire which broke out at the Mangere Bridge school on SaUrday afternoon, when paint was being burned off the building. LARGE HOUSE BURNED. (By Telegniuii.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Saturday. On eleven-roomed house on the Sheridan Estate was destroyed by fire this morning. The premises had been tenanted by the late Mr P. 11. Harper, S.M., and had been unoccupied since lus departure for Christchurch, where lie died. The building was Insured for £6OO. Mr Harper’s furniture and contents, including war souvenirs and Maori curios, were insured for £550.
